His origins trace to the Mennonite communities along the Vistula River delta near Danzig (present-day Gdańsk, Poland), then part of Royal Prussia. The Dirksen name is characteristic of Frisian settlers from the Netherlands who migrated east into the Vistula lowlands during the 16th–17th centuries, where Mennonite congregations established farming communities on reclaimed marshland.
